The most recent eruptions of Haleakala--and the most likely location of the next ones--did not occur in the summit basin, but at the southwest rift zone located in the La Perouse Bay and Makena areas of Maui. These flows were about 200 years ago. The (left) photo shows the bay and the uninhabited island of Kaho'olawe offshore. The (right) photo shows where one of the lava flows originated.
